Why the American West is fighting for water protections

Not all rivers and streams are protected under the Trump administration’s new definition of “water.”

For most of its nearly 50-year history, the Clean Water Act protected all US rivers and streams from pollution. But the Trump administration redefined the types of waterways that get federal protection, which affects some states in the arid West more than any other part of the country. The reason why has to do with the differences between certain types of rivers and streams.

CORRECTION: In the intro, we incorrectly identified the locations of two Washington, DC-area rivers. At 00:12 and 00:15, that section of the Anacostia River runs through Washington, DC, not Maryland. And at 00:22 we incorrectly identified the Occoquan River as running through Washington, DC, when in fact it runs through Northern Virginia.

  • Conservative Logic: lol water comes from bottles, who cares what’s in the rivers? It’s like they have a memory wipe every other decade. The reason why these protections even exist is for US. Yall forget about that time we almost made our own national bird extinct, or that time a company buried tons of literally carcinogenic chemicals UNDER A TOWN, or how about that time a literal river CAUGHT ON FIRE because of pollutants in the water? That kind of stuff happens when companies and corporations are not regulated by the American people.

  • Our village, Agua Fria, literally means cold water in Spanish. The early explorers named it this way because it was the first cold mountain stream they had run into (Onate 1598). This is the Santa Fe River that they encountered. Now excluded from the WOTUS Rule. Yet, two Native American Tribes also called this "cold water place" dating back to maybe at early as 3,500 BCE. President Biden we need our protections back!

  • I can’t get my head around that there are people that can drum up the energy for seeing this kind of policy through. Getting things done normally means hard work. I can only imagine what drag it must be to make a new piece of legislation happen, whatever it’s about. At least for me, hard work requires motivation; harmony between the goal of the efforts and one’s core values, is typically mandatory for anything meaningful to happen. So I totally get how legislators can find the drive to push the clean water act through. But who’s work-spirit is lifted at the thought of the opposite?

  • Whenever I see VOX I know they’re omitting some context to their “reporting”. Yes I do agree that water is life the EPA in 2015 did what was deemed right. Now after looking into WHY Trump rescinded or wanted a revision, I found the Supreme Court case Rapanos vs US which made it clear that not everything is black and white when it comes to waterways and definitions DO matter. Again, I do agree water should be preserved and safeguarded against pollution.

    Miguel SerranoMiguel Serrano3 oy oldin
    • @Ausar additionally, let’s say you live in a condo. And the government one day decides your condo if violating the law. Will you evacuate or would fight back to deem it livable? I’d hope you’d right back! Everyone in this country deserves the right to freedom. And as always, a government big enough to give you everything is capable of taking everything away.

      Miguel SerranoMiguel Serrano3 oy oldin
    • @Ausar and he tried to fill his wet land. Again... HIS wetland.

      Miguel SerranoMiguel Serrano3 oy oldin
    • @Ausar well put it this way, as am american owning land, do you want the government dictating what you can do with your land or do you feel you have bested interest in HOW you know what you wish to do with your land. As far as I’m concerned whether it be an indigenous person or yourself, you know what is best for your land as long as it’s without the legal bounds of the law. Now you stating it’s illegal is your opinion. Hence why the Supreme Court had to intervene to set a precedence. I think it’s not always black and white and it should be taken on a case by case basis.

      Miguel SerranoMiguel Serrano3 oy oldin
    • I read the Rapanos vs US court case, and I fail to see how some guy illegally filling a wetland to build a mall “makes it clear” that this is not black and white

As all water is connected, then the US is going to see the worsening of public health a in a few years or so as...you might pollute the unconnected stream but that pollution will show up in some ones drinking water sooner or later.

NOW THERE MIGHT BE A POSSIBILITY THAT THEY WILL DO IT AGAIN. this time, they might gonna assassinate Joe Biden (and possibly Kamala Harris), during their inauguration.
