Is Racism Making People Sick?

After the events of 2020, we are no strangers to stress and anxiety. But for Black and brown Americans, that stress was nothing new. Racial health gaps have always existed, and socioeconomics and racism within the medical system have long kept equal healthcare out of reach. But what kind of toll does the experience of racism itself have on your body? Glad You Asked host Christophe Haubursin wants to know.

  • On this season of Glad You Asked, we explore the impact of systemic racism on our communities and in our daily lives. Watch all 5 episodes here: Want updates on our new projects and series? • The problem with our society is white women constantly complaining about discrimination despite effectively having all the same powers and perks of white men. We spend more effort collectively appeasing their demands which is energy that could be spent improving racial disparity. White women are the most outspoken yet privileged people in our society.

  • In order for humanity to advance quickly, humans must be very decisive on shaving people with bad genes with lethal injections, the list of people who hold back humanity: 1) extremely violent people, especially to elders 2) convicted murderers 3) rapists and pedophiles 4) convicted drugs trafficking Just by getting rid of these people, globally humanity generates huge surplus of resources which can be allocated into helping talents and supporting both genetics and space explorations. Globally elites must lead decisively for the sake of humanity. It's no magic that China has advanced quickly, their society holds 0 tolerance to murderers and drug trafficking. The world is getting overcrowded with limited resources which has caused conflicts and global issues. Simplify from the aspects of good genes contribution then humanity will naturally advance quicker.

  • Thank you for putting this together. Truly. The medical community has no infrastructure in place to treat these types of things. Much of the trauma that I've experienced in my life is tide to racism. But therapists are especially not equipped to treat my response to racialized trauma as a black woman. For instance, I learned about Racial Darwinism when I was about 12 years old by following a link under an IMDB message board many years ago. There was basically a comment war about a particular black actress that was beautiful, they attributed her beauty to racial admixture even though she was dark skinned. This strongly informed how I felt about my own beauty and intelligence for the rest of my life. This seriously caused a crisis in my thinking. Then at around 20, I saw a documentary here on you tube about all of the different purges that have happen as a result of Racial Darwinist ideology. I was very scarred by this. But doctors have nothing to give.

  • 7:45 Well, I'm fully Asian in the USA, so I can't pass as white at all. I wonder if Asians would be treated differently when they walk into a hospital. My parents have had their bad experiences with the hospitals, and the doctors appear very ineffective. Maybe the hospital reserves the best doctors for whites and the medical trainees for non-whites?

  • These episodes are so important. I love seeing them and what they uncover and the process it takes for them to uncover. I love seeing the different organizations too. Black Men Heal made me cry. It’s important to feel validated. As a Puerto Rican woman, no one knows our history and our oppression. I’m constantly being explained by white people how I’ve made it because I took loans and got an education. My oppression is constantly not validated by white people because I’m white passing. Thank you for showing the realities of this. I can’t wait to see more.

This definitely applies to white people who deny anything that minorities say is true - even coming from a few of my own white friends, who have difficulty seeing viewing life outside of their own shoes. They never had to consider "what they don't know what they don't know".

  • I'm really glad you all made this video. This is an area that I wish was discussed more because it shows the true face of institutional racism in this country. As a medical student about to start my rotations, it's become more and more clear to me that race is a definite contributor to biases and mismanagement of diseases in people of color. More disheartening, it's seeing how racism makes building trust between people of color much harder. On a personal level, reading more about medical racism helped me start the journey of realizing that we still have racism in this country that needs to be dealt with.

  • Not surprised... but this should be at the top of the agenda. Because I am sure you could expand this to the rest of the world too, whenever people from different places come into contact and one is white, or also regarding another color or ethnicity that places itself above others. It being measurable gives me a bit of hope that then, progress might be measurable too.

  • Now, imagine that at a global scale. How Americans and Europeans as a whole are more privileged thanks to exploiting people and resources in other countries. Imagine being from a small island in the pacific seeing the sea level rise everyday because powerful countries don't want to commit to reduce carbon emissions, or a traditional fisherman in Somalia that resorts to piracy because big commercial fishing boats are depleting the sea out of fish, imagine living in Zambia where a certain swiss multinational creates so much pollution that many people die of respiratory diseases, or a poor farmer in Colombia who lost a child to a war financed by a drug mainly demanded by people from the USA, or ...... The list goes on and on.

With that, I can see how Black and African American communities can have health affects from racism and mico aggressions on a daily basis. Wow.. just wow!! I mean I kinda understood before but this is more long term and devastating to one's life and health. We need to work together to stop this.

  • Read Joy de Gruey's book on "Posttraumatic Slave Disorder". Epigenetics is real, black people who are descendants of slavery have generational trauma. What was done in the past and continuously, changed our genetics. Africans do NOT have hypertension, diabetes or hear disease. Also wt America have had their empathy gene obliterated by being so hateful and violent against black people for cenrturies. The normalization of this inhumane society has lasting effects on everyone in America.

I’m sure black and brown women’s life expectancy differ from a white woman’s at least as much as a white woman’s from her male counterparts’. As someone who identifies as female and is seen as female it’s hard to see my advantage being lumped in as “white”, knowing my 40 is so extremely different than my husband’s 40. He literally won’t let me go to see a new doctor without him just to make sure I get the level of healthcare he would knowing that without his presence I may not.

It is difficult to fight the chronic stress when you may be finding it also difficult to have access to the nutrients necessary to fortify your body. Look at black, indigenous Americans and Latinx communities how water quality is parceled out. These are the grotesque attacks of systematic racism, lack of clean water or decent food.
